When should development start with a trial surface?
A focused trial is useful when the decision it needs to support is defined in advance.

One trial, one main question
For a new material grade, unfamiliar coating or difficult-to-access geometry, a sample surface can be investigated before the complete component. The objective may be to assess local texture, edge quality, tool access or a measurement method. Identify the question before running the trial.
Representative conditions
The sample’s material condition, orientation, critical surface slope and workholding should be relevant to the final component. Where the trial surface differs from the finished geometry, record what the result demonstrates and what it does not yet establish. A successful trial does not automatically qualify a production process.
A documented next step
Evaluation leads to a decision: parameter correction, a full trial component, functional testing or a repeatability study. In research, the machining result and experimental performance are separate milestones.
