The application · local geometry shapes function

A periodic profile, microlens array or custom groove pattern may be integral to surface function. Macroscopic form and local structure are two connected levels of design; both must appear in the manufacturing route.

Potential surfaces

Optical gratings, microlens arrays, structured replication inserts, stepped profiles and functional test surfaces. Pitch, height, profile and edge radius together define the task; nominal feature size alone is not enough.

Manufacturing approach

Tool shape, approach direction and surface curvature determine which profile can be achieved. Development often starts with a selected surface area where machining and measurement can be linked.

We define the substrate’s base geometry and its microstructure together. The trial plan also identifies the local characteristic to investigate and its relationship to overall surface function.

What should the trial demonstrate?

We assess local profile, pitch, structure height and edge condition alongside deviations across the affected surface. Effects on light distribution, friction or flow require separate testing suited to the application.

MICRO-OPTICS · FUNCTIONAL SURFACES

Local profiles matter as much as the whole surface.

For gratings, grooves and periodic surfaces, we define profile shape, depth and edge condition alongside pitch. A targeted test area explores the interaction between tool geometry, material and the required local form.

Value: a small test area can provide useful evidence for the full structure.
