Many small surfaces, one optical task
The arrangement and individual geometry of microlenses together influence system performance. The manufacturing plan must therefore specify both local form and the relative positions of the elements.
Beam shaping and homogenisation
For illumination, the starting point is the desired light distribution. Geometry and inspection should address the same objective: what distribution should be created, and over which region?
Local profile, optical-element arrangement and replication route are connected design questions. Evaluation of the prototype and replicated element are identified separately in the development plan.
The substrate can be curved
Microstructures are not limited to flat substrates. On a curved base surface, the position, orientation and machining access of local features must be considered together.
A trial could assess whether the intended local profile can be produced and measured on the base geometry. Functional performance is evaluated by testing suited to the application.
A useful development approach
For a new structure, local geometry can first be assessed over a selected sample area, with optical performance evaluated separately. Surface measurement and light-distribution testing provide different, complementary evidence.
