The application · imaging, sensing and directing light

Optics in vehicles and industrial sensing systems support imaging the environment, emitting light or controlling its direction. LiDAR, infrared sensing, camera inspection and illumination have different requirements, so we consider specific product functions within each market.

Potential applications

Scanning mirrors and reflectors, sensor-optics prototypes, beam-shaping elements and replication inserts for optical parts. For a moving mirror, mechanical datums and mass distribution matter; for illumination tooling, the intended light distribution and replicability are central.

Development starts with application requirements

We agree wavelength, field of view, geometry, environmental conditions and mounting interface. A trial component examines whether the selected manufacturing route can establish the characteristics needed for subsequent system testing.

Complete automotive qualification and functional validation of a sensor extend beyond component machining and must be defined separately.

From optical function to component

Illumination and sensing tasks should be derived from system operation. A surface suited to creating a specified light distribution may differ from one used to collect a returning signal.

The technical discussion identifies the component’s role, environment and later system-test objective. These inputs define a focused component or tooling development task.

For the first discussion

An outline of the optical function and system integration, surface model, substrate, coating, operating range, expected quantity and inspection plan. We distinguish characteristics demonstrated by component measurement from those requiring later system tests.

A component built for the system trial.

For sensor optics, shaping emitted light and collecting the returning signal are separate tasks. A prototype may evaluate field of view, light distribution or integration geometry, each requiring different surface and mechanical priorities.

Value: the first component can answer a defined system-level question.
